It was too wet and dark this year for a good photo. This photo was taken at last year's Mid Winter Swim.
Besides saying hello to Commodore Ian Moncrieff and Mrs. Marion Moncrieff, a weekend of activity took place on Saturday, 18 June and Sunday 19 June 2005.
The annual Mid Winter Swim, in aid of the Seamen’s Mission and the Overseas Games Association took place at Surf Bay on 18 June. Despite the uncomfortable and dark weather, a huge crowd that included people from Mount Pleasant gathered at the bay in swimming costumes and fancy dress to answer the icy water’s call. On the beach was a fire and hot drinks and at the Victory Bar, Kathy and Ally Jacobsen had mulled wine and snacks on offer. It is not yet known how much money has been raised for the two charities. The Seamen’s Mission needs an extractor fan system and the Falkland Islands Overseas Games Association are raising £2,000.00 each for athletes it is sending to the Island Games in Shetland this year.
Later in the afternoon the Mid Winter Fayre, a fundraiser for Christ Church Cathedral took place. Proceedings began at 1500 in the Parish Hall, where there was plenty of food, teas and coffees on sale as well as stalls, Splat the Rat and Darts. Raffles and bottles abounded, while new Cathedral souvenirs were also for sale. An auction took place at 1730, and an hour-long fireworks display due to take place at 1800 had to be postponed because of the deteriorating weather.. When the amount raised is known it will be published. The hall was packed so it is hoped a lot of money was raised. In past years a heating system has been paid for from the amount raised at the Mid Winter Fayre.
Though there was heavy snowfall on Sunday, there was a Christingle Service at the Cathedral at 1700, followed by mulled wine in the Parish Hall. During the dark days of winter, Christingle Services feature the theme, Christ the Light of the World.
It was Sunday’s snow that provided a lot of entertainment for the Children, who received sledges and snow boards for Christmas but had no snow to use them until now.
