Stanley Museum and National Trust hosted a very successful Year of the Sea Exhibition on Saturday and Sunday, June 4th and 5th 2005 at the Parish Hall. It seems as if most of Stanley turned up to view artwork by FICS and Infant/Junior School Children, old historic pictures that haven’t been seen before, pictures of the wrecks in Stanley Harbour and models of vessels that had much of their working life in and around the Falklands. There was even a model of the FIPASS complex as well as written histories and brochures. Contemporary or historical, the Exhibition showed a wide cross section, for example, weddings that have taken place on beaches and famous vessels that have called in to Stanley.
Museum Manager, Leona Roberts, along with Colin Patterson Smith and Shirley Hirtle were at the Parish Hall on both days to answer the myriad of questions that patrons had. They were heavily involved in the organising of the exhibition, which was informative and thorough. It was a celebration about people’s relationship with the sea and the 200th Anniversary of Admiral Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar.
The International Year of the sea is an event that is held in conjunction with Sea Britain 2005, which was instigated by the Greenwich Maritime Museum, as well as 80 other organisations such as Visit Britain and The Trafalgar Commemorations Committee. The goal is to get people to think about the sea and life as an Islander
Being an islander is relevant in Britain but much more so on Ascension Island, St. Helena, Tristan da Cunha and the Falkland Islands. As Islanders, the sea plays an important role in every aspect of life – how Islands have developed, current trade with our neighbours and with the UK and the EU. Our economy is also heavily based on the sea, with the Conservation Zone and fisheries management, hydrocarbons exploration and tourism.
At the Beginning of July there will be celebrations in Portsmouth at which the RRS James Clark Ross and HMS Endurance, two ships familiar to the Falklands, will be playing a major part. In the Falklands, the Exhibition in the Parish Hall is the main event for the International Year of the Sea. There are, however, a few more events planned for later on in the year on Trafalgar day as well as some special anniversaries like the Lighthouse and Bodie Creek Bridge.
Many thanks go to people who brought in items from their personal collections. Their contributions were greatly appreciated by all who visited the exhibition.
