On the last call of the RMS, HE Governor Clancy arrived on Ascension.
HE is no stranger to Ascension or St Helena, having worked as Chief Secretary on St Helena in 1997 to 2000.
After his one day visit to Ascension in November last year, Gov Clancy saw it as an important responsibility as Governor to visit Ascension again, but for a longer period.
During a brief interview with the Islander we asked HE his views on various issues.
Future of the Ascension Island Council
“I feel it will be a challenge for the Island Council being the first democratically elected council. There are many issues to tackle. I would encourage a strategic plan to be implemented for the future”. HE was pleased that by videoconferencing, a meeting between the two Governments was made possible and common concerns were discussed.
Airport on St Helena
“I am a great supporter for an Airport on St Helena; I was delighted to announce its approval” I would like to thank the British Government for being very supportive and hope that the Airport will bring both Islands closer together”
UK
HE will be leaving Asc on Thursday evening to attend a Governors Conference in the UK. He aims to meet potential investors for the Airport on St Helena. Ascension also will be on the Agenda, issues such as right of abode will also be discussed.
Consultative Poll
HE encourages all those eligible to vote in the up and coming consultative poll, for it will affect all Saints, “I feel it is very important for people to vote”
Green Mountain
HE welcomes the idea of Green Mountain becoming a National Park; he believes it is worth preserving and areas such as these benefit the whole island and encourage tourism.
Ascension
HE sees the development of Tourism as a potential investment for Ascension, and hopes that the St Helena Airport will encourage this. It is still envisaged that commercial flights can fly to Ascension, subject to further discussions and criteria i.e.
Demand and enough suitable accommodation.
