Two presentations were made to the Ascension Island Library and Resource Centre on Monday night. Mr Nigel Fry, Head of Transmission and Distribution from the BBC presented a copy of the BBC “Bitesize” television programme. This is a television and internet-based revision guide for people studying for GCSE examinations. There are also text books available in bookshops to accompany the series. These programmes, which can be watched by a group or by individuals, will assist students in their final stages of revision for GCSEs.
The second presentation was made by Mr Steve Gray, Head of Overseas Operations for VT Communications and Mr Ian Coverdale the Regional Manager. They have donated three laptops for use in the Resource Centre. These laptops will add significantly to the computing resources available to people using the Resource Centre and will provide a method for individuals, with no access to a PC, to continue their self driven learning courses using CD ROMs and other computer media. Both donations were received on behalf of the Resource Centre Management Committee by Mrs Bernadette Kettlewell. “Both of these gifts are very much appreciated,” she said. “Having the “Bitesize” programmes available in the Resource Centre means that local students will have the same access to the information in the programmes as the children in UK. And increasing the computing capacity of the Resource Centre is an important way in which the people on Ascension can get greater access the wealth of material which is available electronically these days.” The Resource Centre was opened in December 2004 at Two Boats School and combines the library with a resource facility for members of the public and students at the School. It was built with funding from the FCO, Ascension Island Government with widespread support from the organisations on the Island. It has been restocked with a lot of new books which are available for borrowing.
