New RMS Schedule Released

The RMS St. Helena at James Bay

The new schedule for the RMS St Helena has been published.

Before being published this schedule was discussed at length with Executive Council who advised the Governor that the schedule should be extended up to April 2006, with the inclusion of two UK calls, to allow marketing to get under way soon.  The extension of the schedule will enable data for the trial period to be collected and analysed in time for a longer term schedule to be drawn up.

In addition, as it is the Quincentenary of the discovery of Tristan da Cunha, provision has been made for an excursion trip to Tristan da Cunha. This will only take place if Tristan da Cunha Council confirms that it will underwrite costs and with early indications of interest being translated into firm bookings.

Calls to the UK have been reintroduced not only as a result of the recent public consultation exercise but also as a way in the short term of helping to contain upward pressure on the subsidy.  No decision has yet been made about future patterns of UK calls beyond the two outlined in the schedule extension. Before finalising a schedule post April 2006, the St Helena Government will analyse the benefits of the South Atlantic routes with a view to deciding upon a more permanent route for the RMS.

Press Release

Departure of RMS St Helena

Delay of RMS St Helena

The Governor requested that the RMS St Helena delay its departure from Cape Town yesterday in order to take on much needed explosives and detonators for the Island for blasting.

The explosives were supposed to be in Cape Town before the departure of the RMS on Monday. SHG was informed yesterday that they were still being transported from Johannesburg by train.

The RMS will leave as soon as the explosives and detonators are loaded and the Governor has indicated that calls to Luderitz and perhaps Walvis Bay should be abbreviated to make up time.

Further information will be provided as soon as it is known.

RMS Arrival Time

Governor Clancy has received news from Captain Martin Smith that if the RMS St Helena leaves Cape Town this afternoon it is scheduled to arrive at St Helena on Tuesday 15 February at 0600 hours. The vessel will leave for Ascension Island the following day at 1000 hours.

Due to the delay in Cape Town, the RMS will not be calling at Luderitz this time round. She will however call at Walvis Bay on Friday 11 February, departing the same day

On departure from Cape Town, the RMS was carrying 67 passengers.
