SOUTH ATLANTIC RIDGE ISLANDS: A TOUR OF A LIFETIME

By J. Brock (SARTMA)

South Atlantic Ridge Islands: A Tour of a Lifetime

One of the disadvantages of being a one-man band is that when there must be an absence, there is no one available to carry on. This absence was necessary because SARTMA has an area from the Antarctic to the Equator to cover. Thanks To Lindblad Expeditions and the M/S ENDEAVOUR, that South Atlantic tour included places like South Georgia and Gough Island as well as Tristan da Cunha, Nightingale Island, St. Helena, and up to Ascension Island.

The Zodiac Drivers brought SARTMA up close and personal to Whales, Seals, Penguins, and even endemic fish, which inhabit the South Atlantic.

During the course of the tour, SARTMA was able to interview Marine Officers from all the fisheries in the South Atlantic. Questions about stock assessment, migratory patterns and management techniques were asked, with a surprising variance in approach to them as the ENDEAVOUR sailed further north.

The fisheries articles will begin when the scientific names and some of the distribution data are confirmed. This will take another week.

SARTMA would like to thank the following for technical and logistical assistance in producing the fisheries series as well as the general article about the tour, which will be published first.

Captain Carl Lampe,

Radio Officer, Sven Thorell,

Expedition Leader, Tom Richie,

Dr. Peter Carey,

Dr. Gary James,

Dr. James Kelly,

Under sea Specialist, David Cothran

Attached to this article are a few photos which I hope you will enjoy. There are plenty more photos that will be attached to the General Article and the Fisheries articles.
