A yacht formerly known as the ANTARCTICA has returned to the Falklands 15 years after bringing a film company to the area. TARA 5: HAPPY RETURN TO THE FALKLANDS

A yacht formerly known as the ANTARCTICA has returned to the Falklands 15 years after bringing a film company to the area.  Now known as TARA 5, the 36 metre long yacht is taking a group of 15 deaf people on a trekking and mountaineering adventure, “Mountain of Silence,” to South Georgia.  The group will be taking Shackleton’s route from King Haakan Bay to Stormness.  All of the participants are French and aged people from 30 to 50.

The Chef: Tifenn DuPlessis Kergmard

Five of the six-member crew come from France and the sixth, Alistair Moore, is from New Zealand.  She has been extensively re-fitted especially in the accommodation area.  When FINN visited before in 1991, it was dorm style but now there are cabins.  There is a modern shower room heads.  One of the best places is the enclosed communal wardroom, with double-glazed roof and sunken galley.  Her cruising speed is 7 to 8kts. but she also is capable of cutting through the seas under sail.

Cedric Boissaye, Chief Mate

While in the Falklands, the crew met with several people known from before as well as some they had met on the Antarctic bases during that previous trip.  Unfortunately, the TARA 5 remained moored at FIPASS and there weren’t as many visitors as hoped.

A former Chilean Base Commander meets with Tifenn and Alistair Moore.

TARA 5 has now set sail, after receiving all of her passengers on either the LanChile Flight or via RAF Air Luxor flight.  TARA 5 will return, perhaps around Christmas.

Chief Engineer, Arthur Voirin
