Falklands : Motion for Adjournment Speech by the Hon Mr Roger Edwards

Mr Speaker, Honourable members, In rising to support the Motion for Adjournment I will start by raising the CPA visit of last week. I thought it went off superbly well. It was very well organised. And thank-you to our Clerk, Claudette, ably assisted by Cherie.
Motion for Adjournment Speech by the Hon Mr Roger Edwards
Mr Speaker, Honourable members, In rising to support the Motion for Adjournment I will start by raising the CPA visit of last week. I thought it went off superbly well. It was very well organised. And thank-you to our Clerk, Claudette, ably assisted by Cherie. It was a very apt subject for discussion – self-determination – and some very lively debates. One senior member of the CPA summed it up by saying it was the best meeting he had ever been to.
Here I must add a very special thanks to the musicians and choir of our School under the leadership of Shirley Adams-Leach. It was absolutely superb and they did very well indeed, so thank-you to all those students who took part.
The visit to Bluff Cove was the highlight for many and it brought home the importance of tourism to the Islands. On that day alone, 29 individuals were employed for the day, consisting of drivers, demonstrators, wardens, cooks and waitresses. Time did not allow us visits to other tourist attractions, so I was somewhat dismayed by some of the rather biting comments made by folks about their visit. In two weeks’ time we are holding a referendum about being an overseas territory of the United Kingdom. And I hope people will go out and vote yes to being Falkland Islanders and British.
There should not be a feeling of “Them and Us.” It is our right to determine our own future and we must demonstrate that right by turning out and voting.
It appears to be a very good season for Farmers with wool weights being generally higher than previously and sheep weights to the Abattoir also higher. The weather has not been good and delayed shearing in some cases but the season now seems to be coming to an end in suitable time for the Sports beginning next week. May I wish them all well and say to the Farmers in the Camp, “Enjoy yourselves.”
This is our last Legislative Assembly before the Commander British Forces South Atlantic islands departs so I would like to say a very special thank-you to CBF, Bill and Jill Aldridge and thank them for all the good work they have done in bringing the Military and civil communities close together. I wish them well in the future and request that the Chief of Staff passes it on.
