Falklands : Motion for Adjournment Speech by the Hon Mr Ian Hansen

I am going to mention first of all the recent BICMR CPA held here last week. I have been to three of these regionals before including the one here in 2004 but I think this one was quite exceptional and very good. I think probably because of the combination of extremely good subject matter and some excellent lead speakers and, of course, the exemplary organisation from Claudette and Cherie.

Mr Speaker, Honourable members I am going to be briefer than usual today.
I am going to mention first of all the recent BICMR CPA held here last week. I have been to three of these regionals before including the one here in 2004 but I think this one was quite exceptional and very good. I think probably because of the combination of extremely good subject matter and some excellent lead speakers and, of course, the exemplary organisation from Claudette and Cherie.
I think perhaps the only downside was that the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo was unable to attend and it was also a great shame that our very good friend, Joe Bossano was also unable to be here. Nevertheless, the delegation from Gibraltar was, as usual, wonderful company and very supportive as indeed were all the delegations.
I know that all the delegates and invited guests went away with a positive impression of the Falklands that will stay with them for a very long time.
On an agricultural related matter, I would briefly like to touch upon and that is the information we received at the last AAC meeting that all dogs tested in the last Hydatid Survey were clear. Now this has been a very long time coming and at some stage I think we almost despaired of it ever happening. But I think it’s down to a combination of lots of hard work, a fair bit of experimentation by the Veterinary Department and, of course, very good co-operation from dog owners. And I think that’s the reason why we finally reached this point. This is good news and it proves what can be achieved with perseverance.
I know that some of my Colleagues will be speaking about the referendum so I don’t intend to steal their thunder at all. But I would just like to say to everybody who is listening that a good turn-out is essential and I really strongly urge everyone to please turn out and cast your
vote. And I also hope the vote you cast will send a strong message to Argentina that our right to self-determination will not be compromised.
