Two years ago on the 16th March 2011 the 75,300 tonne bulk carrier
Oliva that was travelling from Santos to Singapore ran aground on
Spinners Point, Nightingale Island which is part of the Tristan da
Cunha group.
The 6.8 metre lifeboat which had been launched and tied to the vessel
broke loose during the night and disappeared. The crew was rescued
by the fishing vessel M.V. Edinburgh which was fishing at an island
nine miles away and a visiting cruise vessel.
Now almost two years later it has been found washed ashore at Coorong
in South Australia, having floated about 8,000 kilometres, it appears
that the boat was still in good condition and only the seats inside
the vessel had been damaged.
