Since the beginning of the year the Roads Section has been busy progressing with the Roads Project. This project is temporarily boosting resources within the Roads Section to try and reduce the backlog of maintenance on St Helena’s road network.

Since the beginning of the year the Roads Section has been busy progressing with the Roads Project. This project is temporarily boosting resources within the Roads Section to try and reduce the backlog of maintenance on St Helena’s road network.
On Saturday, the Roads Section reopened the Gordon’s Post to The Dungeon road. This has been a significant improvement project with major structural and drainage improvements, in addition to the resurfacing of over 1 mile of road. On Monday 4 February work will move to the road from Scotland to the Hermitage, which will be closed to traffic for up to three weeks.
Another road which reopened over the weekend was the Upper Plantation Road. This road has been used as the first resurfacing with a process called Micro Asphalt. This is the same type of process as Slurry Seal, except that it uses Grit mixed in with Colas and Dust to make a thicker, stronger, surface. Early indications are that this has produced a good waterproofing seal over the old road and a wearing surface which should last for many years.
Work at Longwood continues for a while longer, resurfacing in the Ropery Fields area. This work continues without a road closure to minimise disruption to road users; we are grateful for those drivers who slow down on the new surface and while driving past Roads Section staff.
