COME AND SEE HOW SOLID WASTE WILL BE MANAGED IN THE FUTURE

The official launch of the St Helena Solid Waste Management Strategy will take place on Tuesday 20 November 2012 at 1.30pm at the Millennium Forest.

The strategy will be launched at a Media briefing by Tara Pelembe, Director of Environmental Management and Georgina Young, Senior Environmental Health Officer. This will be followed by a quick walk to the Horse Point Landfill Site.

The strategy is key to the sustainable management of the Island’s Solid Waste and members of the public are encouraged to attend the event to see first hand the Island’s plan for managing solid waste in the future.

A 14-seater bus has been arranged on a first come first served basis for those requiring transport to the site. Bookings for a seat on the bus should be made to Ian Rummery at the Environmental Management Directorate on telephone number 2270. The bus will leave the Grand Parade in Jamestown at 1pm. Members of the public are also welcome to make their own way to the briefing.

The Solid Waste Management Strategy is committed to managing solid waste in a more sustainable manner in future years, while recognising the practical limitations that exist on a remote Island such as St Helena. It explains the plans to reduce and manage waste in a manner that is more efficient and sustainable and that will ultimately bring benefit to the communities and the environment of St Helena.

The principles of the strategy are based on the 3 Rs - ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ and how everyone can apply these principles to their everyday decisions.

The Environmental Management Directorate looks forward to seeing you on Tuesday.
