ENVIRONMENTAL RISK ADVISOR FOR SHG
Arriving at the end of last month was Glen Westmore, Environmental Risk Advisor/Trainer for the Environmental Management Directorate (EMD).
Glen is on Island for a year and will principally work with the Environmental Risk Management Team of EMD helping to create environmental protection policy and legislation, and also provide technical advice and training to staff.
Glen will be working mainly in the fields of pollution control, climate change and solid waste management helping to achieve National Goal Three of the St Helena Strategic Development Plan; ‘Effective Management of the Environment’, and more specifically the targets of the National Environmental Management Plan, approved early this month. His work will help with delivery of the Island’s strategic environmental goals and set up environmental protection legislation to combat pollution and other damage to the Island’s environment.
Glen commented:
“St Helena is an extraordinarily beautiful place but even in only a few weeks I’ve seen how easily the environment can be spoilt by problems like pollution and litter. Some people don’t realise that looking after the environment doesn’t just mean caring for endangered plants and animals and conserving designated areas, it also means protecting the land we use to grow food, the water we drink and the air we breathe.
“Key areas for the economic stability of the Island like fisheries and tourism also rely on a well-managed and healthy environment so it’s important for people’s livelihoods too. I am looking forward to helping set up the systems which ensure that Saints get to enjoy this unique environment for many generations to come.”
Glen has a Masters Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Cardiff University, and worked for the UK Environment Agency for seven years as a Pollution Control Officer and Senior Environmental Project Manager. He also worked for West Sussex County Council for four years as a Senior Advisor for natural resources before heading to St Helena for this year-long technical post.
When not at work Glen enjoys sports and plays rugby, squash and basketball, and is hoping to continue his new found enthusiasm for archery whilst on St Helena. He is also keen on reading and movies, and plans to work his way through the DVD libraries here on the Island during his stay.
Glen can be contacted by email at env.engineer@environmentalmanagement.gov.sh or by phone on 2270 ext. 206
