Around 60 members of the public attended an open door display at Essex House on Saturday 8 September, as part of the Solid Waste Management Strategy public consultation for St Helena.
SUCCESSFUL OPEN DAY FOR SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT CONSULTATION
Around 60 members of the public attended an open door display at Essex House on Saturday 8 September, as part of the Solid Waste Management Strategy public consultation for St Helena.
The fittingly entitled display ‘Let’s Talk Rubbish’ organised by the Environmental Risk Management Division of the Environmental Management Directorate (EMD) focused on aspects of the new draft Solid Waste Management Strategy - organic waste collection for composting, improved kerbside collection services, improved landfill management, provision of civic recycling centres and much more.
Personnel from EMD were also present to talk through the various displays and answer any questions.
A questionnaire made available on the day was completed by 31 visitors and the following results were collated:
1) What do you consider to be organic waste?
76% responded kitchen waste (peelings, egg shells, teabags etc) and garden waste, 24% did not know.
2) What do you do with organic waste produced in your home?
35% responded put it in the bin, 51% said feed to animals, 24% said as compost for the garden.
3) If you were asked to save organic waste produce what would you expect from SHG to facilitate this?
89% answered provide a container and/or it would have to be collected, 11% said they would not save any.
4) Would you purchase bags of compost locally produced from organic waste?
80% answered yes, 16% said no, 4% said maybe.
5) Do you know where your household waste goes after collection?
95% said Horse Point Landfill Site/Dump, 5% said they did not know.
6) What do you think is the current life span of the Landfill Site?
42% said 10 years or less, 30% said 15 years, 11% said 20 years, 7% said 30 years, 10% said 50 years or more.
7) Do you currently recycle any of your household waste?
51% said yes, 49% said no.
8) If recycling centres were made available, would you take your recyclable waste to these centres?
83% said yes, 17% said no, it would need to be collected.
9) Do you have any suggestions / comments on future solid waste management on the island?
75% said more litter management and enforcement, 70% said more recycling facilities, 40% said more rubbish bins in public areas. Other comments received were to promote reusable bags and use less plastic bags/packaging, replace the old refuse collection vehicles so they don’t break down, export metal cans and plastic bottles off island, support recycling initiatives.
All completed questionnaires were numbered and placed in a draw for the chance to win a gift from SHAPE. Congratulations to the following winners who can now collect their gift from Essex House:

“Saturday’s Open Day was very well attended and all at EMD were pleased with its success. Comments received on the day will be included as part of the response to the strategy to ensure that our way of managing solid waste is sustainable.
“For those who didn’t get a chance to attend there is still time to comment on the strategy as deadline for submissions is not until 4pm on Friday 14 September 2012.”
