PROCLAMATION ANNOUNCING DATE OF BY-ELECTION ISSUED

In a Proclamation issued today, 7 September 2012, Governor Mark Capes has announced that a By-Election to fill the vacant seat on Legislative Council, following the recent resignation of Tara Thomas on 31 August, will take place on Wednesday 17 October 2012.

Section 78 of the Constitution requires that a vacancy be filled by way of an election held not less than six weeks, nor more than three months, after the vacancy occurs. The date has been chosen so as to hold the election on the first lawful date, recognising the convention that elections are held on a Wednesday.
