COUNCILLOR TARA THOMAS WINS CHEVENING SCHOLARSHIP
St Helena Councillor Tara Thomas has provisionally secured a prestigious Foreign and Commonwealth Office Chevening Scholarship, and will now undertake a year-long MBA at the London School of Business & Finance, under its Global MBA and ACCA programme, commencing January 2013.
From October this year, Tara will conduct three months of pre-Masters studies online and make the necessary administrative arrangements, before setting off for London for a year of studies. As a result of this major achievement, Councillor Thomas, currently in the UK on private leave, will soon be resigning from LegCo and ExCo, and stepping down as Chair of the Economy & Finance Committee.
Tara said of her news: ‘I am thrilled with the news and grateful to the FCO’s Chevening Programme for selecting me. I’m disappointed that my term on Council will conclude early but confident the knowledge and skills I gain from the course will prove useful to the Island’.
HE Governor Mark Capes added: ‘I warmly congratulate Tara on securing this valuable and exciting opportunity to study at a leading institution in London. As a Councillor, Tara has made an impressive contribution to the working of government and I shall greatly miss her input at meetings of Executive Council. However, I have no doubt that in the years ahead Tara, whether in government or in the private sector, will continue to play a prominent role in shaping a positive future for St Helena. I wish her every success with her studies and will look forward to following her career’.
Once Councillor Thomas is back on-Island (10 August 2012), further information will be provided on the arrangements for a By-election and for identifying Tara’s successors on the Economy & Finance Committee and on ExCo. The next meeting of LegCo is scheduled for 10 September 2012.
Whilst in the UK, Cllr Thomas has attended the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, and the Olympics Opening Ceremony, on behalf of St Helena - along with other representatives of the UK OTs. She also visited Shropshire, in her capacity as the Deputy Chair of the Education and Employment Committee, to meet with colleagues involved in our Education Sector Support Programme.
Chevening Scholarships are the UK Government’s global scholarships programme. Established in 1983, these scholarships support study at UK universities - mostly one-year Masters’ Degrees - for students with demonstrable potential to become future leaders, decision-makers and opinion formers in a wide range of fields, including politics, business, the media, civil society, religion, and academia.
The highly regarded Chevening programme has so far brought over 40,000 scholars to the UK, and over a thousand mid-career Fellows since 2004-05. Chevening Scholarships are currently offered in approximately 110 countries, in most regions of the world. In the current academic year, there are over 700 Chevening scholars at universities across the UK. The Scholarships are mainly funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, with some contributions from universities and other partners in the UK and overseas, including governmental and private sector bodies.
The name Chevening, is derived from Chevening House in Kent, currently the joint Official Residence of the Foreign Secretary and the Deputy Prime Minister.
