The first results of this year’s SATs have now been made available. These are the standard assessment tests that children take at the end of Primary Education in English, Mathematics and Science.

The first results of this year’s SATs have now been made available. These are the standard assessment tests that children take at the end of Primary Education in English, Mathematics and Science.
Whilst the Science results are still being finalised, the English and Maths results show a much improved picture when compared to last year.
This year a total of 34 children took the tests out of a possible 40 pupils. Three children didn’t take the tests because of their complex Special Educational Needs, and three children were excluded from the tests because of their low current attainment.
All three schools made significant improvements on previous performances. The percentages of pupils who improved their performance is as follows:
Harford English 77% Maths 62%
Pilling English 66% Maths 50%
St Pauls English 59% Maths 50%
Overall figures for the Island show that the percentage of children achieving Level 4 or above (the benchmark standard) was:

Colin Moore, Director of Education and Employment said:
‘The children and teachers have worked very hard over the past year and we should all congratulate them on achieving the best set of results that the Island has seen in many years. The overall picture is very encouraging and there are some individual children who are performing very well indeed.
‘The number of children at level 5 is the highest we have seen. These children are potentially the future leaders of the Island and it is important that we enable them to realise their ambitions by building on their current success when they transfer to Secondary School.
The Director went on to say: ‘Whilst we are all very pleased with the overall improvement there is still a lot of work to do. Our standards still need to rise further. In the UK last year, just over 80% of children achieved level 4. That is what we must aim for. I would also point out that the achievement of boys is still significantly below that of girls and there are a small but significant group of boys who have yet to reach any real standard of literacy that would be acceptable. For these children we must do better.
‘Nevertheless, there is much here to celebrate and we now have a foundation of good results upon which we can look to improve further. As a Directorate we had set a target to reach 60% in English and 50% in Mathematics. I am delighted that these targets have been exceeded.’
