The 8th annual Standard Chartered Bank Stanley marathon took place on Sunday, 18 March 2012 in increasingly windy conditions. Though the race began in bright sunshine and warm near gale force breezes the weather deteriorated and it ended with horizontal rain and the finish-line blowing away.
A record number of 183 participants – 58 of whom were running in the marathon - came from Japan, Kenya, the Falkland Islands, Chile, Argentina, the United Kingdom and North Wales. Eighteen relay teams participated as well as 42 people in the Fun Run. Subscriptions for the race raised £5,000.00 for the bank’s charity, “Seeing is Believing.” That’s enough to restore sight to 250 people. With those funds being matched by another charity, 500 people can receive sight during £20.00 cataract operations.
