St Helena’s Councillor Buckley to Attend Key Meetings in UK
Councillor Rodney Buckley will be in the UK shortly to attend key meetings on behalf of St Helena. This will be his first overseas visit since the 2009 elections.
Councillor Buckley will be representing St Helena at the Overseas Territories Consultative Council (OTCC) and is to be joined by the St Helena Government UK Representative, Kedell Worboys MBE.
This will be an important meeting for the Island since the UK Government plans to publish a new White Paper on the Overseas Territories next year and the OTCC was established as a result of the 1999 White Paper “Partnership for Progress and Prosperity”.
Councillor Buckley will also be attending the International Parliamentary Conference on the Millennium Development Goals. These goals were adopted by World Leaders in 2000 and relate to eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, achieving universal primary education, promoting gender equality and empowering women, reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, ensuring environmental sustainability, and developing global partnerships for development.
Councillor Buckley, as the newly appointed Chairman of the Education and Employment Committee, will also be involved in education related meetings at the Centre for International Development and Training where he will discuss the DFID-funded Education Sector Support Programme. Other meetings are also being arranged with DFID, the FCO, St Helena Line and Andrew Weir Shipping and with Kedell Worboys.
Councillor Buckley will return to the Island in early December.
