MEXICAN JOURNALIST VISITS THE FALKLANDS

By J. Brock (FINN)

Mexican journalist Pascal Beltran del Rio, Managing Editor of Nuevo Excelsior is in the Falklands to do a series of articles about Falklands’ history, politics and culture.  By admission he is in the process of discovering things he previously was unaware of and everything is new.

“Mexicans focus on the 1982 War but know little else about the Falklands,” he said.

While here he wants to steer away from bias and find how Islanders see their future given the increase of hydrocarbons exploration and the continued income from fisheries, agriculture and tourism.

Mr del Rio’s Falklands’ Experience began on the air-bridge as he wanted to experience the flight.  However, he will return to Mexico via the Lan flight.  It took him 10 hours to fly to London and 17 hours to reach the Falklands from Brize Norton.  In between experiencing the difficulties in getting to and leaving the Islands, he will experience what daily life is like for Islanders.

“I hope to give Latin America a better understanding about the people of the Falkland Islands,” He said.  “The Islanders have a story to tell and I want to tell it.”

His plans are also to try and tell the story from the Argentine prospective as well so that the series of articles will have balance.
