Governor Gurr’s 100 Ascent of Jacob’s ladder

For the 100th time Governor Gurr has defeated Jacob’s ladder; this hundredth ascent all in the name of charity.

On Friday 10th June Governor Gurr along with 102 other sponsored participants gathered at the might be used to raise money for local charities, SHAPE, New Horizons and the St Helena Family Support Trust.

To mark the climb Governor Gurr donated £100 to these local charities and threw out the challenge that if the event attracted 100 sponsored climbers, he would double his contribution. As things turned out that number was exceeded by two.

“I started doing this shortly after my arrival in November 2007, partly because the very existence of the ladder provides a challenge and partly in order to get some exercise by walking home at the end of a day’s work – something very few people in the UK can do. I should have realized that Saints would be both generous and clever enough to exceed the threshold of 100 others – but only just! I found the climb itself and the handing out of certificates afterward particularly enjoyable. It brought together a genuine cross-section of our society of all ages, from 4 to 66.

“I am particularly grateful for those who helped to organize the event – the charities concerned and the police, who lent us their club. But pride of place must go to all those who braved the 699 steps, especially those who tackled it for the first time - or after a prolonged absence from trying!

The money raised is still being collected and will be announced as soon as we know it.”
