Update on Economist

In early January 2011 St Helena Government appointed on a three month contract, Harry Shutt as an  Economist.

Harry is based within the Strategic Policy and Planning Unit (SPPU). The SPPU provides support to Councillors and departments on policy developments and strategic planning.

Harry has been working with the SPPU for a month now and has been engaged principally in the reviewing of various factors affecting the competitiveness of St Helena from the standpoint of prospective investors, in view of the projected opening of air access. He has also been supporting the teams responsible for implementation of the Reform Programme laid out in the Memorandum of Understanding– specifically those relating to Land/Housing, Immigration, Investment and Elimination of Untargeted Subsidies.

Harry is also studying the most appropriate mechanisms for regulating private sector monopolies that may be created as a result of SHG’s programme of divesting certain public sector enterprises and services.

Following a revision of his original schedule Harry will now be leaving St Helena (earlier than originally planned) on 28th February but will be available to provide support from the UK as needed during March and April.
