M/V KELSO SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED ANOTHER NAME

The former M/V KELSO, renamed M/Y TIANIC, is in the news again because an RNLIlifeboatsman helped co-ordinate a Caribbean sea rescue while out DIY shopping in Britain after a friend called to say he was on sinking ship called Titanic. Alex Evans, a volunteer on the RNLI lifeboat in Aberystwyth, said he initially thought his friend was joking because of the ship’s name.

An article in the Telegraph said that while shopping in a DIY store in Aberystwyth, West Wales,Alex Evans, 27, received a mobile phone call from former colleague Mark Corbett, 4,000 miles away pleading for help. After scribbling the vessel’s coordinates on the back of a till receipt and relayed the distress message to British coastguards.

The Telegraph article went on to say that US coastguards pumped more than 8ft of water from the ship’s engine room before a tug towed it 60 miles to the safety of St Kitts.
