DFID DONATES MEDICAL EQUIPMENT
Over the past 5 years equipment worth £235,444 has been procured under the DfID funded HealthLink 2 project. The project furthermore supported the Public Health and Social Services Department (PHSSD) with the contracting and training of medical staff and visiting specialists and contributed resources for the development of St Helena’s new Health and Social Services Strategy 2008 -2012 ‘Focusing on the Future’. Management support for the HealthLink 2 project was provided by the Northern Ireland based organisation NICO and their support has been invaluable.
The equipment procured by PHSSD with DfID project funds included various medical equipment such as X-ray machines, an ultrasound scanner and laboratory equipment as well as 2 land rovers with radio equipment and walkie talkies. The equipment has been effectively used for the past 3-5 years. However, as the HealthLink 2 project has come to an end, the equipment has now officially been handed over to the Government of St Helena by DfID and PHSSD has gratefully accepted the donation.
DfID and NICO continue to support the PHSSD through the current HealthLink 3 project, the successor of the HealthLink 2 project, and the department’s development strategy ‘Focusing on the Future’. Building on the vision of the St Helena Sustainable Development Plan, 'Focusing on the Future' takes an important step forward and sets out plans to further enhance health and social care service provision on island and achieve better care and better health for the population of St Helena. Health promotion and disease prevention are important components of this strategy. The new strategy was approved by the Executive Council late last year. The support available through DFID enables PHSSD to move forward with the implementation of the department's strategic plan and achieve what it set out to accomplish, to attain a healthier future for St Helena.
