GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE BRIEF

By J. Brock (FINN)

There was only one item that the Hon Mike Rendell mentioned at GPC Brief and that was an investigation of customer complaints about billing for the use of broadband service by Cable & Wireless.

The Hon Mr Rendell said that what was agreed happened because of discontent about broadband usage and the amount that is being charged.  Rather than following up individual complaints the Assembly will investigate the systemic problem.  Having undertaken an initiative, the Assembly will examine specific complaints, not on behalf of the complainant but to get a broader background as to whether the complaint is valid.

Cable & Wireless have agreed that they would do a full analysis of a particular day’s broadband usage and report back to the regulator – the Falkland Islands Government.  In relation to one complaint this has already happened.  According to the Hon Mr Rendell the findings have been forwarded to the complainant for their comment – the right of reply.

“We are going through this whole process in order for FIG as the regulator to be clear in its own mind whether there are justifiable complaints about the way in which broadband usage is being recorded,” said Mr Rendell.

Cllr Rendell told Stacey Bragger of FIRS that as of Friday the report from Dr Doyle hadn’t been received.  It was expected over the weekend of the 21st but was not received.  Dr Doyle is at present overseas and Cllr Rendell thinks this is why the report hasn’t been received yet.
