Press Release

A Human Resources Department

As of today, 1 October 2007 the St Helena Government’s Personnel Department has been renamed Human Resources Department.

As part of the change Barbara George’s title will change from Chief Personnel Officer to Chief Human Resources Officer. Dougie Bennett’s title will change from Assistant Secretary (Human Resources) to Human Resources Officer (Contracts) and Joey George from Assistant Secretary (Personnel) to Human Resources Officer (Administration).

The Personnel Department was originally part of the old Secretariat but, following a public service review, it became a separate department in 1990. At the time, its remit was to address general staff issues but, over the years, the department’s role grew and it moved from the Castle to No 3 Main Street.

Barbara George, Chief Human Resources Officer said “The department has developed from one that had a guidance and advisory body and some policy development to one which actively formulates and reviews policies. It has a more strategic approach and outlook.” She added “The change demonstrates SHG’s commitment to developing its workforce and working towards modern day human resource practices. We strive towards investing in all Government employees and in this regard, the Human Resource title is more fitting. It signifies a move away from simply managing staff towards developing them so that SHG meets its core objectives.”

The department will continue to work to modern-day human resources practices and plays an instrumental role in developing a sustainable workforce.
