Post Office Makes History for St Helena

The Post Office will make history on 31 August 2006 with the release of St Helena’s first circular stamps.

Previously focusing on rectangular and square shaped stamps Postmistress, Beverley Francis, said this is not something the Post Office will do a lot of but she hopes the circular stamps will appeal to children as well as the adults.

The stamps are being issued on 31 August to coincide with the deadline for surface mail – 12 September.

This year’s stamps will form part one of the Christmas issue with six stamps being issued, and another 6 ready to issue in December 2007. Stamps follow the story of the 12 days of Christmas and will be available on first day covers, as mint sets, and sold over the counter for mail and parcels.

If all stamps are sold, the Post Office will generate about £11,000 of which about half will be profit. The profit will go into Revenue with the remainder being used to cover printing and production costs.

Circular stamps are not that popular in the philatelic world although sets have been produced by other Overseas Territories.
